In the pre-dawn hours of December 22, 2017, Scott Fricker, a 48-year-old man, and his wife, Buckley Kuhn-Fricker, were fatally shot in their Reston, Virginia, home. The tragedy unfolded just days before Christmas as the couple had gathered with family for the holiday. The suspect was their 16-year-old daughter's 17-year-old boyfriend, Nicholas Giampa. The couple had recently forbidden their daughter from continuing the relationship after discovering Giampa's apparent espousal of neo-Nazi ideologies.
The confrontation occurred around 5 a.m. after the parents heard a sound and found Giampa inside their daughter's bedroom. When Scott Fricker told the teenager to leave, Giampa produced a gun and shot both parents. After shooting the couple, Giampa turned the gun on himself, sustaining a critical head wound. Scott Fricker and Buckley Kuhn-Fricker were pronounced dead at the scene, while Giampa survived his self-inflicted injury. Four other family members were present in the house at the time but were unharmed.
The motive for the killings was traced back to the parents' efforts to end their daughter's relationship with Giampa. Buckley Kuhn-Fricker had grown alarmed after finding a Twitter account she believed belonged to Giampa which contained posts praising Adolf Hitler, calling for a 'white revolution,' and featuring derogatory comments about Jewish and gay people. She had emailed the principal of the private school both teenagers attended to share her concerns just days before the shooting. Following an intervention by her parents, the daughter had agreed to end the relationship.
Nicholas Giampa was charged with two counts of murder. Following his recovery from his injuries, he was incarcerated in January 2018. In September 2019, a judge ruled that Giampa, then 19, would be tried as an adult. The subsequent legal proceedings were fraught with delays, including challenges related to Giampa's mental competency to stand trial due to brain damage from the gunshot wound and appeals over the admissibility of statements he made to police. A trial was eventually scheduled for January 2025. However, on August 22, 2024, Nicholas Giampa, 24, was found dead in his cell at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Authorities investigating his death stated that they did not suspect foul play.
