In what has been described as a targeted and isolated incident, 31-year-old Hyungjoon Choi, a male resident of Reston, Virginia, was fatally shot on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, while he was working out at a Gold's Gym in his community. The tranquility of the fitness center was shattered at approximately 1:13 p.m. when a gunman approached Choi and opened fire, striking him in the upper body.
Despite the immediate efforts of a bystander who rendered aid and the swift response of emergency services, Choi succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital.
The suspect in the shooting was quickly identified as 43-year-old Steve Taehee Ha of Chantilly. He had signed in as a guest at the gym that day, providing his name and address, which greatly aided the police in their investigation. After fleeing the scene on foot, a search involving K9 units and a helicopter was launched. Within eight hours of the incident, Ha was located and taken into custody. Both Choi and Ha were members of the gym.
Steve Taehee Ha has been charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond. While a motive for the shooting has not yet been publicly released, law enforcement officials have stated that they believe the attack was not random. The investigation into the connection between the two men is ongoing. A grand jury has since indicted Ha on the charges, and a jury trial has been scheduled to begin on May 19. A conviction for second-degree murder in Virginia carries a potential sentence of five to forty years in prison, with an additional mandatory minimum of three years for the firearm charge.
