In the quiet suburban landscape of Reston, Virginia, a tragedy unfolded on a Wednesday afternoon, forever altering the lives of two families and sending ripples of grief through the community. On February 10, 2021, the life of 20-year-old Samuel Onyeuka, a male resident of Reston, was abruptly cut short in a senseless act of violence. The young man, who was in the process of enlisting in the United States Military, was discovered lying on the ground in the 2300 block of Branleigh Park Court,
having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite the prompt response of emergency services, Onyeuka was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fairfax County Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, the first in the county for 2021. Detectives began to meticulously piece together the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Their investigation led them to a nearby shopping center where both Onyeuka and his assailant were traced. Through a combination of financial records and surveillance footage, authorities were able to identify a suspect and the vehicle used to flee the scene—a silver SUV, possibly a Nissan Rogue. The investigation painted a grim picture of a targeted attack, not a random act of violence.
The determined efforts of the police culminated in the arrest of 20-year-old Jalenn Maurtiece Keene of Newport News. Keene, a former classmate of Onyeuka's at South Lakes High School, was apprehended in Newport News just days after the shooting. A firearm was recovered at the time of his arrest and was sent for testing to determine if it was the weapon used in the commission of the crime. Keene was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was held in custody in Newport News, awaiting extradition to Fairfax County to face the charges against him. The motive for the shooting remained under investigation, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a young life filled with promise.
