In the summer of 2018, a promising young life was tragically cut short in Roanoke, Virginia. Jacob Aldridge, a 19-year-old Caucasian male from Salem, found himself in the 1600 block of Eastern Avenue NE on the night of July 10th. It was around 10 p.m. when the sound of gunfire shattered the evening calm. Aldridge was behind the wheel of his Mercedes when he was struck by a bullet in the back of his head. The car then crashed, and he was discovered alone in the vehicle.
Rushed to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, he was listed in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Jacob Aldridge succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the morning of July 12, 2018, turning the investigation into a homicide.
The Roanoke City Police Department descended on the scene, launching a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting. During their search, investigators uncovered a trail of nearly twenty bullets leading from a nearby house to Aldridge's car. Search warrants executed on the residence revealed evidence of a significant drug operation, with police seizing drugs, scales, cash, and firearms from inside the home. Drugs were also discovered inside Aldridge's vehicle. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police detained and later released a handful of individuals, but no immediate arrests were made in connection with the murder itself. The house in front of which Aldridge was shot had been the scene of a fatal home invasion and shooting the previous Thanksgiving, though authorities stated they did not believe the two incidents were related.
As the investigation progressed, authorities began to unravel the circumstances that led to Aldridge's death, pointing to a drug deal that had taken a violent turn. In September 2019, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced a significant development in the case with the arrest of Aaron Woods. Prosecutors identified Woods as the leader of a major marijuana operation that he allegedly ran out of his home on Eastern Avenue, the same street where Aldridge was fatally wounded. His arrest was part of a broader initiative aimed at curbing gun violence in the city. While Woods was arrested in connection with the drug operation, his arrest was directly linked by prosecutors to the investigation into Aldridge's death, which they described as occurring after Aldridge attempted to flee the deadly drug deal.
