In the summer of 2018, the life of Cedric Bernard Gillum, a 30-year-old male from Salem, was tragically cut short in Northwest Roanoke, Virginia. On the evening of Sunday, July 29th, police responded to a call at the Embassy Inn on Melrose Avenue. There, they discovered Gillum suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, but sadly succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
His death was the sixth homicide in the city of Roanoke that year.

In the days following the shooting, the Roanoke Police Department identified 30-year-old Shaniqua Hundley as the suspect. A warrant for second-degree murder was issued for her arrest. Investigators believed that Hundley and Gillum were acquainted, though the exact nature of their relationship was not publicly detailed. The search for Hundley continued for about a week.
On Monday, August 6, 2018, Shaniqua Hundley turned herself in to the authorities at the police department. She was served with the warrant for second-degree murder and taken to the Roanoke City Jail, bringing a significant development to the investigation into Gillum's death.
