On a Thursday afternoon in Newport News, Virginia, the life of 27-year-old Raghib Ismail Brooks came to a violent end. It was October 11, 2018, when police were called to the 700 block of Gloucester Drive around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting. There, they found Brooks, a resident of nearby Hampton, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The incident prompted a brief lockdown at Heritage High School, located less than half a mile from the scene.
For more than two years, the case
remained under investigation, a period of uncertainty for a family and community seeking answers. Raghib, known to some as 'Heb,' was remembered as a witty, caring, and free-spirited individual. He was a father to a son and a daughter, a son, a brother, and a loyal friend. His death left a void in the lives of his many relatives and friends who cherished him.
Then, in April of 2021, a breakthrough in the case brought a suspect into custody. On Monday, April 19, 2021, Newport News police arrested 32-year-old Antione Harris of Richmond. He was charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the deadly shooting of Raghib Brooks. The arrest marked a significant development in the long-standing investigation into the 2018 homicide.
