In the winter of 2018, a 20-year-old woman named Diamond Moore was fatally shot in Alexandria, Virginia. On the morning of Friday, December 7, 2018, police responded to a call about a possible shooting in the 5500 block of Holmes Run Parkway. Upon arrival at approximately 9:46 a.m., officers discovered Moore on the street with an injury to her upper body.
She was transported to a local hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Family members reported that Moore was a student at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. She had been home recuperating from a car accident that had occurred about six months prior. On the morning of the incident, her mother and fiancé were at work when Diamond went outside and was shot on the street.
The day after the shooting, Alexandria police arrested a suspect in connection with the case. William Thomas Layton, a 32-year-old man from Largo, Maryland, was taken into custody on Saturday, December 8, 2018. He was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Layton was held without bond at the Alexandria Detention Center following his arrest. The incident was recorded as the fourth homicide in the city of Alexandria for that year.
