In the spring of 1977, a community in Alexandria, Virginia, was gripped by a series of violent crimes against women. Among the victims was Aletha Byrd, a 34-year-old African American woman who worked as a personnel counselor. Her life was cut short in a brutal act of violence that was part of a larger, terrifying pattern. Byrd was reported missing from her home on April 10, 1977, sparking concern among local authorities who were already investigating the disappearances and murders of other
young women in the same area.
For over a month, Aletha Byrd's whereabouts remained a mystery. Then, on May 17, 1977, her body was discovered in a wooded area. The investigation revealed she had suffered multiple stab wounds, a testament to the violent nature of her death. The discovery of her remains confirmed the community's worst fears and intensified the ongoing investigation into the string of murders that had plagued the apartment complexes along Shirley Highway.
The breakthrough in the case came with the identification of a suspect, Montie Ralph Rissell, an 18-year-old high school dropout who lived in the same vicinity as the victims. Rissell, who had a history of violent behavior, became a person of interest after police surveillance and forensic evidence began to connect him to the crimes. A search of his car on May 18, 1977, uncovered personal items belonging to Aletha Byrd, including her wallet, keys, and a comb. This crucial evidence led directly to his arrest.
Faced with the evidence against him, Montie Rissell confessed to the rape and murder of five women, including Aletha Byrd. He recounted how he would accost his victims in apartment elevators and parking lots, armed with a knife from his mother's kitchen. He would initially tell them it was a robbery before forcing them to drive to secluded wooded areas. Despite promising not to harm them if they complied with his demands for sexual intercourse, he murdered each of his victims after the assault. In Aletha Byrd's case, he stabbed her 14 times. As part of a plea deal, the abduction and rape charges were dropped, and Rissell pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms in prison for his crimes.
