In the summer of 2019, a quiet Virginia Beach neighborhood was rocked by a tragedy that unfolded within the walls of a family home. Sheila Brady, a 73-year-old Caucasian woman, and her husband, Roy Brady, 72, were found deceased in their Kellam Road residence on July 15th. Their lives were cut short in an act of violence that would later be revealed to have been committed by their own son.
The couple, who had lived in their home for over three decades, were described by neighbors as a
sweet, peaceful, and frail elderly couple who were deeply cherished in their community. Sheila was known for her love of the beach, beading, and knitting, but above all, for the immense love she had for her family, especially her grandchildren. The shocking discovery of their deaths came after police were prompted to conduct a welfare check at their home.
The investigation swiftly identified their 44-year-old son, Christopher Shawn Brady, who had been living with his parents, as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The events that transpired on the day of the murders were chillingly recounted by Christopher's own daughter, who was present in the house. She reported hearing loud voices followed by gunshots and then witnessed her grandmother lying in a pool of blood.
Following the murders, Christopher Brady fled with his daughter to Richmond. In an attempt to cover his tracks, he tried to stage the scene as a robbery and disassembled the murder weapon, disposing of the barrel in the water as they crossed the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. However, his efforts to evade justice were short-lived, and he eventually turned himself in to the authorities. The remaining parts of the gun were discovered in his truck, and forensic analysis confirmed it was the weapon used in the killings.
In October 2021, Christopher Brady pleaded guilty to the charges against him. While the motive for his horrific actions remained largely unexplained, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed under his plea agreement. The case left a lasting scar on the community and served as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
