In the late summer of 2019, the life of 21-year-old Jaequan Lamonte Johnson, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Hopewell, Virginia. On the evening of August 29th, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Arlington Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered Johnson suffering from severe gunshot wounds. He was rushed to John Randolph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. Detectives determined that Johnson had been shot while inside a vehicle on Maple Street. After being wounded, he was found on the grass near the corner of Maple Street and Arlington Road. The Hopewell Police Department launched a thorough investigation into the homicide, diligently following leads to uncover the identities of those responsible for the young man's death.
Through their investigative efforts, law enforcement identified four suspects in connection with the murder. In the weeks following the fatal shooting, a coordinated effort between the Hopewell Police Department, the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, and other local, state, and federal partners led to the apprehension of the individuals believed to be involved. Aaron Drumheller, 23, was the first to be taken into custody on September 3, 2019, in Petersburg. The following day, on September 4, Shaone Lovett, 23, was arrested in Hopewell. On September 10, 21-year-old Dae'kwon Castelle was apprehended in Dinwiddie County. The final suspect, Zhaquan Fisher, 23, was arrested on September 20, 2019, in Colonial Heights. All four men were charged with first-degree murder and additional felony charges related to the death of Jaequan Lamonte Johnson.
