Tyrell RayQuan Fields, a 25-year-old Black man, was the son of a local pastor in Petersburg, Virginia. His father, Raymond Bradley, later reflected on the nature of violence in the city, stating that "hurt people hurt people" and lamenting a "lack of regard for human life" that he felt was prevalent. His family’s experience would become a painful example of that sentiment.
On the evening of October 8, 2020, tragedy struck.
Just before 6 p.m., Petersburg Police responded to a call about a person shot at the intersection of Seaboard and Church Streets. When they arrived, officers found Tyrell Fields lying in the road with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation led police to identify a suspect. On October 30, 2020, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, authorities arrested Jaquan Anderson in the 1200 block of Paul Street. The arrest was made without incident. Even with a suspect in custody, police announced that they still needed the public's help with the ongoing investigation and urged anyone who saw or heard anything in the area on the day of the shooting to come forward.
Anderson was initially charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A few days later, on a Tuesday in early November, authorities added a charge of murder. Anderson was incarcerated and held without bond while the case proceeded.
Despite the arrest and murder charge, the legal proceedings did not bring the resolution his family had hoped for. Six years later, in July 2026, Tyrell’s father spoke at a community roundtable on violence. Pastor Bradley shared that there had been no closure for his family in his son's killing. He described his profound grief and shock, stating, “I literally saw the man who murdered my son walk out of the door with his friends, giving each other high-fives.” As of July 2026, the case had not resulted in a conviction for the murder of Tyrell Fields.
