On the tragic evening of December 18, 2020, Cierra A. Kelley, a 33-year-old Black female from Gloucester, Virginia, was fatally wounded in a double shooting in Hampton, Virginia. The incident occurred at approximately 11:48 p.m. in the 2200 block of West Mercury Boulevard. Kelley and a 41-year-old man were sitting in their vehicle in a parking lot when an individual approached and opened fire.
Following the shooting, the victims drove themselves to a local hospital, where Kelley ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The male victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Hampton Police Division launched an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Brian Latrell Fayne was arrested in connection with the shooting. He faced a series of charges, including one count of second-degree murder, one count of maiming, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, one count of shooting in public, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Fayne was subsequently taken into custody and held at the Hampton City Jail.
In September 2023, justice was served for Cierra Kelley and her family when Brian Latrell Fayne was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting. Cierra Kelley was remembered by her loved ones for her deep affection for her family, her active presence in her community, and her devotion to her children. Her untimely death left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her.
