On a pleasant Tuesday evening in Richmond, Virginia, the courtyard of the Belt Atlantic apartments was filled with people enjoying the weather. Among them was 30-year-old Sharnez 'Shy-Shy' Hill, cradling her 3-month-old daughter, Neziah. The ordinary scene was shattered at around 6:30 p.m. on April 27, 2021, when gunfire erupted. Two groups of men began shooting at each other across the courtyard, and in the chaos, five innocent bystanders were struck by bullets.
Sharnez Hill was killed at the scene, and her infant daughter, Neziah, was rushed to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. A 29-year-old woman, a 15-year-old girl, and an 11-year-old girl were also wounded in the crossfire but survived.
The tragic and senseless deaths of a mother and her baby sent shockwaves through the Richmond community. Law enforcement quickly launched an investigation into the shootout. In the days and weeks that followed, five suspects were apprehended. Donald Hemmings, 22, Shyheem Martin, 23, and Shamondrick Perry, 19, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Later, 18-year-old twin brothers, Kevon and Kavon Bynum, were also taken into custody. The charges against the suspects grew to include first-degree murder.
The legal process began to unfold for the men accused of turning an apartment courtyard into a deadly battlefield. One of the suspects, Kevon Bynum, eventually pleaded guilty to seven charges, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Sharnez and Neziah Hill, as well as three counts of malicious wounding for the injuries sustained by the other victims. In March 2022, a judge sentenced Bynum to 52 years in prison for his role in the devastating shooting. The cases against the other four defendants were set to proceed through the court system, leaving a shattered family and community to mourn the profound loss of a young mother and her infant child.
