In the autumn of 2021, on a Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old Nicholas Kyle Joseph was in his car on Johnson Street in Onancock, Virginia, when his life was cut short. It was around 3:15 p.m. on October 13th when the sound of gunshots pierced the air, followed by the sight of a single-vehicle crash. When police arrived, they found Nicholas inside his car, having been shot multiple times in the head, face, and upper body.
He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, on October 14, 2021.
The investigation into the young man's death quickly led authorities to three suspects, all teenagers at the time of the shooting. The Accomack County Sheriff's Office charged a 15-year-old male, whose name was withheld due to his age, along with 17-year-olds Daniel David Douglas and Jordan Eric Ames. The investigation revealed that the incident was connected to an attempted robbery, with court records indicating Nicholas was involved in selling marijuana. Inside his vehicle, authorities discovered quantities of bagged marijuana, three guns, and spent casings.
The legal proceedings that followed saw the two older teenagers tried as adults. Jordan Eric Ames was indicted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and related firearms offenses. A nearby doorbell camera and other evidence, including DNA and gunpowder residue, linked him to the scene. He ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Daniel David Douglas, who admitted to supplying the firearms for the robbery though he did not fire the fatal shots, also pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and firearms charges. For his role in the crime, and for a later escape from custody, he received a 15-year prison sentence.
