On October 30, 2021, 65-year-old Terry Allen Hurline was shot and fatally wounded in an incident that authorities would later describe as a domestic dispute. Emergency services were called to a residence in the 300 block of
Countryside Lane at approximately 5:38 p.m. following a 911 call reporting that a family member had shot another family member. Upon arrival, Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies and Public Safety personnel discovered two men outside the home with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. One of the men, identified as 54-year-old David Ray Wyatt of Rocky Mount, was pronounced dead at the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Terry Allen Hurline was found with life-threatening injuries and was transported from the scene to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into the deaths of the two men was handled by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Authorities quickly assessed the situation and determined it to be an isolated incident, assuring the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
The case was investigated as a murder-suicide, with David Ray Wyatt identified as the perpetrator in the shooting of Terry Allen Hurline before taking his own life.
