In the winter of 2022, the life of 26-year-old Shakereia Lanae Hines, a mother of three, was tragically cut short in Portsmouth, Virginia. On the afternoon of January 14th, at approximately 1:34 p.m., officers responded to a call in the 1100 block of Virginia Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Hines suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
Following the incident, the Portsmouth Police Department released surveillance images of a person of interest.
The individual was described as an adult Black male, dressed in all black, including a face mask, and carrying a crossbody bag with green lettering. He was last seen walking south on Virginia Avenue, near the intersection with Portland Street, shortly before the shooting occurred. The release of these images was part of a public appeal for information to help identify the person responsible for Hines' death.
Several months later, in July 2022, a significant development was made in the case. Authorities arrested 21-year-old Jashaun Lee Richardson in connection with the murder. Richardson was taken into custody by the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office on unrelated matters before being charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and shooting in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.
