On a summer day in Shenandoah, Virginia, a violent encounter tragically cut short the life of Jay Scott Campbell, a 53-year-old male resident. On July 21, 2022, Campbell was found deceased in his pick-up truck near a home on Buzzard View Place, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The incident also left his son, Justice Campbell, seriously injured with multiple gunshot wounds, for which he required surgery.
Responding to a report of a shooting, law enforcement officers from multiple
agencies arrived at the scene. They discovered Jay Scott Campbell in his vehicle and later located his injured son nearby. The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Scott Edward Simandl, was apprehended at the scene without incident. An investigation of Simandl's residence revealed a significant number of rifles and ammunition, while a search of Campbell's truck found no firearms.
Following the investigation, Scott Simandl was charged with the first-degree murder of Jay Scott Campbell, the aggravated malicious wounding of Justice Campbell, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Simandl, a biopharmaceutical engineer with no prior criminal history, was held without bond. In January 2023, a Page County grand jury indicted him on all charges. Subsequently, Scott Simandl was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Jay Campbell and the aggravated malicious wounding of his son.
