William P. Stanley, who served as the Sheriff of Dickenson County, Virginia, tragically died on July 25, 1902, at the age of 33. His death was the result of a gunshot wound he sustained six weeks earlier, on June 12, 1902, while attempting to serve a warrant. The warrant was for a man accused of feloniously assaulting another individual with a horseshoe.
