Deputy Constable Alfred Hall was tragically shot and killed on August 22, 1903, in Dickenson County, Virginia. Hall was assisting his relative, an elected constable, in arresting a drunk man who was causing a disturbance near the Virginia-Kentucky border. The constable had deputized Alfred Hall and another man to help with the arrest. During the attempt to apprehend the drunk man, the suspect opened fire, shooting Deputy Constable Hall five times.
