In the late summer of 1903, a pall of sorrow fell over Dickenson County, Virginia, with the untimely death of Deputy Constable Alfred Hall. A male officer of the law, he was fatally wounded in the line of duty on August 22nd of that year. His end of watch came abruptly and violently, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who wore a badge in the rugged terrain of Southwest Virginia at the turn of the 20th century.
