In the late afternoon of September 4, 2022, the life of 30-year-old Caleb Pittman was tragically cut short in Suffolk, Virginia. Emergency services received multiple calls about gunshots fired in the vicinity of South Saratoga Street. Responding officers discovered Pittman between several buildings in the 300 block of the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite their efforts, the male victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide of Caleb Pittman, a man known affectionately as 'Cee' and 'Shorty Big Head' to his friends and family, quickly led Suffolk detectives to a suspect. Preston Davis IV, a 29-year-old from Suffolk, was identified as the individual sought in connection with Pittman's death. The events leading to his capture unfolded dramatically a few days later on September 7, 2022. Police received a report of a woman being assaulted by a man in a vehicle near Pitchkettle Road. When officers located the car and attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to comply, initiating a pursuit.
During the chase, the female passenger threw herself from the moving vehicle. Shortly after, the driver, identified as Preston Davis IV, abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by the pursuing officers. Following his arrest, Davis was charged with a litany of offenses related to both the events of that day and the murder of Caleb Pittman. For the incident on September 7th, he faced charges of abduction, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, felony eluding of police, and numerous traffic offenses. In connection with Pittman's death, Davis was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting with the intent to maim, injure, or kill. He was subsequently held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
