On the last day of the year, December 31, 2022, the life of 32-year-old Cheyna Nicole Haberer was tragically cut short in her Danville, Virginia, home. A vibrant and kindhearted mother, daughter, sister, and friend, she was known for bringing joy to those around her. Originally from Syracuse, New York, she was remembered as a happy person who would be deeply missed.
That evening, concerned for her welfare, the Danville Police Department was dispatched to her residence on Glen Oak Drive
for an urgent well-being check around 9:23 p.m. When officers arrived, they were unable to make contact with anyone inside and were compelled to force entry into the home. Once inside, they discovered Ms. Haberer, who had died from an apparent gunshot wound.
Further investigation at the scene revealed the body of 33-year-old Jamison Enrique Braxton-Sears. Authorities determined that Braxton-Sears, who lived with Haberer, had shot her before turning the gun on himself in what was ruled a murder-suicide. Neighbors in the area were shocked by the violent event, noting that the couple had only moved in the previous summer and they had not heard any disturbances that night or witnessed any prior signs of conflict.
The Danville Police Department concluded that there were no other suspects involved in the tragic incident. Both bodies were transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for further examination. As the sole suspect died at the scene, the investigation was concluded without any arrests or criminal proceedings. A memorial service was later held to honor and celebrate the life of Cheyna Haberer.
