In the late summer of 1977, a tragedy unfolded in the quiet community of Hackettstown, New Jersey, forever marking the date of August 26th with sorrow. On this day, William Nagle, a male resident of the town, had his life cut short in a sudden and violent act. At the age of 27, his future was extinguished without warning, leaving behind a community in shock and mourning.
The events of that day were not a targeted act against him but rather a random spasm of violence that caught several innocent people in its wake.
The perpetrator was identified as 20-year-old Emile Benoist. Armed with a. 44-caliber rifle, Benoist embarked on a shooting spree that began near the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad tracks on Grant Avenue. Without any apparent motive, he fired at individuals as they went about their day, turning a peaceful afternoon into a scene of chaos and terror. The deadly rampage extended from Hackettstown into the neighboring Mansfield Township, claiming the lives of five other people in addition to Nagle. The other victims included a 14-year-old boy, David Galvin, as well as Robert Visconti, Jeffrey L. Gianquitti, Stephen Werner, and Clifford Sowers.
Law enforcement was alerted to the shootings around 5:36 PM and quickly responded to the unfolding massacre. A manhunt for the shooter ensued, leading officers to a cornfield where they cornered Benoist. As police closed in, Emile Benoist took his own life, bringing an end to the bloodshed but leaving a lasting scar on the community. The investigation that followed confirmed that Benoist had acted alone in his deadly assault. Consequently, there were no other suspects pursued, and no arrests were made in connection with the horrific event. The incident left the town grappling with the senseless loss of life and the memory of a day when violence shattered their peace.
