On a tragic summer day in Hackettstown, New Jersey, 14-year-old David Galvin's life was cut short in a sudden act of violence. It was August 26, 1977, when a gunman, later identified as 20-year-old Emile Benoist, began a shooting rampage along the railroad tracks that ran through the quiet town. David, a young male, was among the first victims, fatally shot as he was innocently riding his minibike near the tracks.
The peaceful community was thrown into chaos as Benoist continued his
deadly path, randomly firing his. 44-caliber rifle at anyone who crossed his way. In the end, six people, including David Galvin, lost their lives in the senseless attack. The other victims were identified as Clifford Sowers, 38, Jeffrey L. Gianquitti, 19, Robert Visconti, 35, Stephen Werner, 20, and William Nagel, 27.
A massive manhunt ensued, with state and local police utilizing bloodhounds and a helicopter to track down the shooter. After a tense four-hour search, law enforcement officers cornered Benoist in a nearby cornfield. As the authorities closed in, with the area illuminated by the helicopter's searchlight, Benoist turned the rifle on himself and took his own life. Due to the suspect's suicide, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of David Galvin and the other victims, leaving a community to mourn the devastating loss of life.
