On a tragic day in Montclair, New Jersey, Stanley Scott Walensky, a 42-year-old White male, lost his life in a brutal act of violence that shook the community. The incident occurred on March 21, 1995, at the Watchung Plaza Post Office where Walensky was a dedicated employee with 14 years of service. He, along with three other individuals, became the victim of a robbery that ended in a senseless quadruple homicide.
The perpetrator was 29-year-old Christopher Green, a former part-time
postal worker who had previously worked alongside two of his victims, including Walensky. Motivated by mounting debts and financial desperation, Green entered the post office just before its closing time. He ordered the five people inside, two postal workers and three customers, to lie face down on the floor in a back room. Green then shot them at close range with a 9-millimeter handgun, tragically ending the lives of Walensky, his co-worker Ernest Spruill, 56, and two customers, Robert Leslie, 38, and George Lomaga, 59. A fifth victim, David Grossman, 45, was critically wounded but survived the attack.
Following the horrific act, Green fled the scene with over $5,000 in stolen cash. However, his freedom was short-lived. A tip led authorities to his apartment in the neighboring town of East Orange the very next day. Upon his arrest, Green confessed to the robbery and the murders, citing his overwhelming financial troubles as the reason for his actions. Investigators found a 9mm handgun, approximately $2,000 of the stolen money hidden under his refrigerator, and bloody clothing in a nearby trash bin.
Christopher Green pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. On September 22, 1995, he was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in federal prison, ensuring he would never have the possibility of parole. He also received an additional 25-year sentence for the wounding of the sole survivor. The violent death of Stanley Scott Walensky and the other victims left a lasting scar on the Montclair community, a somber reminder of a day when a quiet suburban post office became a scene of unimaginable tragedy.
