In the quiet, suburban community of Montclair, New Jersey, the afternoon of March 21, 1995, turned into a scene of horror. Inside the small Watchung Avenue satellite post office, a deadly armed robbery unfolded, claiming the life of 56-year-old Ernest Spruill, a dedicated postal worker with over 30 years of service who was nearing his retirement. Along with Spruill, three other men lost their lives that day: his colleague Stanley Walensky, and two customers, Robert Leslie and George Lomaga.
A fifth man, David Grossman, was critically wounded but survived.
The perpetrator was quickly identified as Christopher Green, a 29-year-old former temporary employee of the post office. Green, who had worked alongside Spruill and Walensky, entered the establishment and forced the five individuals to the floor before shooting them at close range with a 9-millimeter handgun. The motive for this violent act was robbery, as Green was reportedly burdened by a significant amount of debt and sought to alleviate his financial troubles by stealing from his former workplace. It is believed that he shot his victims because they could identify him.
Following the gruesome incident, law enforcement launched an intensive investigation. Green was apprehended shortly after the crime and confessed to the robbery and the murders. He revealed that he used the stolen money to settle outstanding debts, including back rent. With no prior criminal record, the shocking violence of his actions stunned the Montclair community. Green was subsequently arrested and, in 1995, received a life sentence for his crimes.
