In the city of Paterson, New Jersey, a dedicated police sergeant's life was cut tragically short in a sudden act of violence. Enrico Venditte, a 47-year-old Caucasian male, served with the Paterson Police Department for 16 years, known for his commitment to his duty. On May 23, 2001, while on a break from his shift, Sergeant Venditte, in full uniform, went to a rental property he owned at 224-226 Clinton Street to address an ongoing issue with a tenant he had twice attempted to evict.
Upon entering the apartment, Sergeant Venditte was ambushed by the tenant, who fired a shotgun twice, fatally wounding the officer before he had a chance to draw his own weapon. In the immediate aftermath of the deadly assault, the tenant then took his own life.
The violent encounter left two men dead and a community in mourning for one of its protectors.
Concerns arose when Sergeant Venditte failed to check in from his break, prompting a search. Several hours later, his body was discovered at the Clinton Street property, a grim end to what should have been a routine part of his day. The investigation into the deaths concluded that the tenant acted alone in the murder-suicide. Consequently, with the perpetrator deceased at the scene, there were no arrests made or suspects sought in the killing of Sergeant Enrico Venditte. He was survived by his wife, a young daughter, and a young son.
