On the night of April 4, 2010, Nia Haqq, a 25-year-old Black female, and her fiancé, Michael Muchioki, were returning to their Jersey City, New Jersey, home after celebrating at their engagement party. As they parked their car on Randolph Avenue, their lives were cut tragically short in a senseless act of violence. The couple was ambushed by two women and a man in what authorities later described as a robbery and carjacking gone wrong.
Both Haqq and Muchioki were shot in the head.
The assailants fled with personal belongings, including Haqq's engagement ring, Muchioki's wallet, their cell phones, and gift cards they had received at their party. The investigation into the brutal double homicide led to the arrests of three suspects: Shiquan Bellamy, his cousin Latonia Bellamy, and Darmellia Lawrence. The evidence against the trio was substantial, and they were subsequently charged with the murders.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of justice for the grieving families. Shiquan Bellamy was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 30 years. Darmellia Lawrence received a 20-year sentence for her role in the crime. Latonia Bellamy was initially sentenced to a lengthy prison term, which was later resentenced to 70 years after an appeal. She will not be eligible for parole until she has served 64 years of her sentence.
