In the winter of 2025, the life of 15-year-old Cianna Lee, a female who had moved to the United States from Jamaica for a brighter future, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Jersey City, New Jersey. On the night of Saturday, January 18th, Cianna was in a car with her 37-year-old stepmother, returning home after a celebratory family dinner.
As they were driving near Martin Luther King Drive and Union Street, their vehicle was struck by gunfire.
Jersey City police responded to reports of the shooting shortly after 11 p.m. and discovered the two victims inside a car on Oak Street. Both Cianna and her stepmother had sustained gunshot wounds. They were rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. While her stepmother was treated for a non-fatal injury, Cianna succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after 1:20 a.m. on January 19th. The Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that her death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male from Jersey City the following Thursday. The suspect was identified as Willie Shuler. He was charged with a number of serious offenses, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and two weapons charges.
In October 2025, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced that the now 17-year-old Willie Shuler would be tried as an adult. The decision to move his case from the juvenile to the adult criminal justice system underscored the gravity of the crime. Shuler faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and weapons offenses.
