In the early morning hours of February 15, 2015, the life of 25-year-old Taquan Tay McNeil, a Black male, was tragically cut short on a street in Trenton, New Jersey. At approximately 2:20 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting on Boudinot Street. Upon arrival, they discovered McNeil lying on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide was undertaken by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force.
Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, Naquan M. Green, a 26-year-old man also from Trenton. When authorities moved to apprehend Green, he allegedly attempted to dispose of a handgun by throwing it from a fifth-floor window, which resulted in additional weapons charges against him.
Green was ultimately charged with murder and several weapons offenses in connection with McNeil's death. In September 2017, the legal proceedings concluded when Naquan Green was sentenced to five years in state prison for the killing. Under the terms of his sentence, he would be required to serve 85 percent of the term before becoming eligible for parole. The relatively short sentence for a murder charge sparked concern and discussion within the local community.
