On a tragic summer morning in 2015, the life of 24-year-old Alicia Martinez-Izaguirre was cut short in a violent act of domestic violence. Originally from Honduras, she had moved to the United States at the age of 15 in pursuit of a better life and resided in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Described by her family as a cheerful and hardworking individual, she had attended school and was gainfully employed.
The events that led to her untimely death began to unfold after she ended a
relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Giver Quiroz-Vasquez. Unable to accept the breakup, Quiroz-Vasquez began stalking her. On the morning of June 24, 2015, he followed her from her new boyfriend's house as she made her way to work. He tailed her as she stopped at a Dunkin' Donuts and even fired a shot at her car on Docks Corner Road in South Brunswick, but missed.
Undeterred, Quiroz-Vasquez continued to follow Martinez-Izaguirre into the parking lot of the Prologis Industrial Park, where she worked. At approximately 7 a.m., in the then-empty lot, he approached her vehicle and fatally shot her twice in the head. Alicia Martinez-Izaguirre was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the murder, Giver Quiroz-Vasquez fled the area, abandoning the Volkswagen Passat he had borrowed to carry out the attack. However, law enforcement officials were able to track him to New Hope, Pennsylvania, where he was arrested the next day. The case marked the first murder in South Brunswick since 2008. Quiroz-Vasquez was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder. In January 2018, a judge sentenced him to life in prison for the stalking and murder of his former girlfriend. The judge also ordered that he have no contact with her family.
