In the summer of 2016, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in Orange, New Jersey, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Wilmar Larose, a 25-year-old Black man from Landing, was in the vicinity of Main Street and North Day Street on the evening of July 26th when he was struck by multiple bullets. The attack, which occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m., also wounded another individual, a 24-year-old man from East Orange, who ultimately survived his injuries.
First responders rushed Larose to University Hospital in Newark in a desperate attempt to save him. Despite their efforts, his wounds proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 10:53 p.m. The violent end to a young life prompted an immediate and intensive investigation, spearheaded by a joint effort between the Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
Detectives canvassed the area, seeking to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
In the days and weeks that followed, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. They urged anyone with knowledge of the crime to come forward and contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line. However, despite the ongoing investigation and the public pleas for assistance, the case grew cold. No suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made in connection with the murder of Wilmar Larose. The promising life of a young man was extinguished on a city street, and those responsible for his death have yet to be brought to justice.
