In the quiet borough of Carteret, New Jersey, the life of 63-year-old Briccio Guevara came to a violent end on December 6, 2016. Returning to his home, he was fatally shot in the entryway. The sound of gunfire prompted neighbors to alert the authorities. Police discovered Guevara at his residence, and he was quickly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway.
Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after 12:01 a.m.
An investigation into the shooting was launched by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office in conjunction with the Carteret Police Department. Their efforts led to the apprehension of two suspects in connection with the murder. The men were identified as 21-year-old Miguel Delgado Benitez and 32-year-old Juan Carlos Marrero-Cardona. Both individuals were subsequently charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, hindering prosecution, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Bail was set at $1 million for each of them.
In December of 2017, the two men admitted their roles in the events that led to Guevara's death. Miguel Delgado Benitez pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated manslaughter, while Juan Cardona Marrero entered a guilty plea for conspiracy to commit armed robbery. As part of a plea agreement, Benitez faced a 25-year prison sentence, and Marrero a 10-year term. The sentences were subject to the No Early Release Act, meaning both men would have to serve 85 percent of their prison terms before the possibility of parole. The sentencing was scheduled for March 2, 2018.
