In the early morning hours of June 29, 2002, the life of 22-year-old Rashiem “Rock” Reed was tragically cut short on a street in his hometown of Carteret, New Jersey. The young, Black male had been enjoying a night out with friends, completely unaware of the violent turn the evening would take. After spending time at a local spot called Charlie's Pub, Reed, along with a friend, went to another friend's house to continue their night.
It was outside this residence on Union Street that the fatal encounter occurred.
Around 3:30 a.m., a man identified as Eligio D. Bueno, who was described as a friend of Reed, approached him. An argument reportedly ensued, believed to be over a monetary debt. The confrontation escalated dramatically when Bueno produced a handgun and shot Reed in the head. The sound of the gunshot shattered the quiet of the neighborhood, and Reed fell to the ground as his assailant fled the scene. Emergency services were called, and Reed was rushed to Rahway Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into Rashiem Reed's murder quickly pointed towards Eligio D. Bueno as the primary suspect. A manhunt was initiated, and on July 12, 2002, Bueno was apprehended in Newark. He was subsequently charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and resisting arrest. Another charge of receiving a stolen automobile was also brought against him but was later separated from the murder trial.
Eligio D. Bueno's case went to trial, where a jury found him guilty on the charges of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and resisting arrest. For his crimes, Bueno was sentenced to a total of 56 years in state prison. The conviction was later upheld after an appeal, bringing a close to the legal proceedings and ensuring that the man responsible for the untimely death of Rashiem “Rock” Reed would be held accountable for his actions.
