On a cold January night in 2017, the lives of three people were tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence inside a Jersey City apartment. Among them was 26-year-old Ishear Bailey, a man whose life was taken in what authorities would later describe as a targeted, gang-related execution. On the evening of January 16th, police responded to reports of gunshots on Fulton Avenue.
Inside the residence, they discovered a grim scene: Bailey, his 25-year-old girlfriend Janaya Lee, and 31-year-old Quadel Chisolm, all deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Lee was four months pregnant at the time of her death.
The investigation that followed painted a chilling picture of betrayal and street vengeance. Authorities identified two suspects, Markell “Sayboy” Brown and Terence “Sweet Meat” Shaw, as members of a rival gang. The attack was allegedly orchestrated to specifically target Bailey. Investigators believe that Brown and Shaw used one of their own associates, Quadel Chisolm, to gain access to Bailey's apartment. Once inside, they shot Bailey in the head, shoulder, and arm. They then turned their weapons on Janaya Lee, shooting her in the head and chest. Before fleeing, the gunmen also killed Chisolm, a move investigators suspect was to eliminate a potential witness to their crimes.
The collaborative efforts of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, the Jersey City Police Department, and the FBI, under the umbrella of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative, led to the eventual charges against Brown and Shaw. The two men face a litany of serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, murder in aid of racketeering, and causing death through the use of a firearm. The case underscored the devastating impact of gang violence, leaving a community in mourning and families forever shattered by the loss of their loved ones.
