In the early hours of May 15, 2017, the sound of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet at the Jumping Brook Apartments West complex on Route 33 in Neptune, New Jersey. Multiple 911 calls flooded the Neptune Township Police Department around 12:38 a.m., reporting that shots had been fired. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Mark Ruffin Sr. of Lakewood.
Emergency responders immediately began rendering first aid to Ruffin before he was rushed to the nearby Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, Mark Ruffin Sr. was pronounced dead at 2:47 a.m.
His death was quickly ruled a homicide, prompting a joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Neptune Township Police Department.
In the days following the fatal shooting, authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible. The Monmouth County Crime Stoppers offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. However, at the time of the initial investigation, no suspects had been identified, and no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting death of Mark Ruffin Sr. The investigation into his murder was described as active and ongoing as authorities continued to search for those responsible for his untimely death.
