In the early morning hours of the Fourth of July in Neptune, New Jersey, the life of 26-year-old Ayres Gray, Jr. was tragically cut short. The young man, a resident of Manalapan, was discovered inside a parked vehicle on South Concourse, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m., shattering the holiday peace.
Responding officers found Gray gravely wounded. He was quickly transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead approximately an hour after the shooting. His mother later remembered him as someone who loved his family and friends deeply and unconditionally.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Neptune Township Police Department have been diligently working the case, which is being investigated as a homicide. Authorities have made public appeals for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Gray's death. A $5,000 reward has been offered for any information that results in an arrest. As of now, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made. Investigators believe there may be a connection between the shooting that killed Gray and shots that were fired at a house party on Hillview Drive shortly before he was found. The community awaits answers and justice for a life taken too soon.
