In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 26-year-old Kawiiy Banks of Irvington was tragically cut short. On June 12, 2018, at approximately 11:32 p.m., gunfire erupted in the area of South 6th Street and 11th Avenue. Banks was struck by the bullets, and emergency services were called to the scene. He was swiftly transported to University Hospital in a fight for his life.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Banks’s injuries proved to be too
severe. He was pronounced dead at 1:50 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities announced that the case was active and ongoing. They appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for Kawiiy Banks's death. However, in the days and years that have followed, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the homicide. The case remains an open investigation, leaving a family and community still waiting for answers and for justice to be served.
