In a tragic and violent outburst on a Tuesday afternoon, Marco Antonio Rosa Moreira, a 45-year-old man, was fatally shot in a restaurant in Long Branch, New Jersey. The incident, which stunned the local community, unfolded at the Bom DMais luncheonette and pizzeria on Broadway on August 21, 2018. Moreira, an Oakhurst resident, was seated at a table with a woman and several of her family members when the tranquility of the eatery was shattered.
The alleged shooter, identified as
40-year-old Miguel Leal Camara, reportedly entered the restaurant around 3:15 p.m. and approached the table. The woman with Moreira was Camara's ex-girlfriend, and there was an active restraining order against him. Disregarding the court order, Camara is said to have fired a single, fatal shot to Moreira's head. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after, at 3:38 p.m.
Following the shooting, a chaotic scene ensued as other patrons and the woman's family members bravely attempted to intervene and disarm Camara. During the struggle, Camara also allegedly tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend, but was unsuccessful. A passing police officer was flagged down by a motorist who witnessed the commotion and a gunshot through the restaurant's window. The officer entered to find a violent struggle over the weapon.
As the officer tried to apprehend him, Camara allegedly attempted to grab the officer's firearm. However, with the help of the others in the restaurant and the timely arrival of more officers, Camara was ultimately subdued and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, weapons offenses, disarming a law enforcement officer, and violating a domestic violence restraining order.
