In the late summer evening of August 26, 2024, the bustling Long Branch train station in New Jersey became the scene of a tragedy that claimed the life of James Hailey. A 43-year-old man from Newark, Hailey was on the platform at approximately 7:30 p.m. when he was fatally shot. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
The incident left Hailey's family and
friends mourning the sudden and violent loss of a man described as a cherished father, devoted son, and loyal friend, known for his kind heart and strong character. His unexpected death created an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
The investigation into the shooting was launched by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Long Branch Police Department. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 19-year-old Damian Bass. An arrest was made in the Effort section of Chestnuthill Township, Pennsylvania. Bass has been charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face the charges.
