In the late hours of a Wednesday evening, the quiet of a residential street in Deptford, New Jersey, was shattered by the sound of gunfire that would end the life of 22-year-old Jodeci Robinson of Woodbury. On November 28, 2018, police were called to Andaloro Way around 9:22 p.m. for a report of multiple gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered Robinson lying on the ground in front of a residence, suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Cooper Medical Center, but his injury proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. An autopsy would later confirm that Jodeci Robinson, a male, died from a gunshot wound to the back, and his death was ruled a homicide.

The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the arrest of 22-year-old Marcel Steele of Deptford. The incident occurred at Steele's home, where a music recording session was reportedly taking place. Another man, 26-year-old Saliim Bey of Pine Hill, was also shot during the altercation but survived his injuries. Authorities stated that the motive for the deadly shooting was a dispute over money that Robinson allegedly owed to Steele.

In the days following the shooting, Marcel Steele was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jodeci Robinson, as well as the attempted murder of Saliim Bey. He also faced charges for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The investigation also resulted in charges against Steele's mother, 41-year-old Shasta Steele. She was charged with third-degree endangering an injured victim and fourth-degree obstruction, connected to the events that transpired at her home on the night of the fatal shooting.
