In the fading daylight of a Tuesday afternoon in Newark, New Jersey, chaos erupted in the 700 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard. It was approximately 4:47 p.m. on June 18, 2019, when gunfire shattered the city's peace, leaving a scene of bloodshed and panic. When the sirens quieted and the immediate danger passed, 29-year-old John Warren of East Orange lay dead, his life abruptly ended by the violence that had unfolded.
