In the spring of 2020, a shooting in Newark, New Jersey, claimed the life of 28-year-old Devante Perry. On the evening of Saturday, May 16, Perry was on the 100 block of Avon Avenue when he was fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:50 p.m.
