On a summer day that was supposed to be for celebration, tragedy struck in Newark, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of two families. Nekeya Grady, a 36-year-old Black/African American female from Willingboro, was fatally shot on July 4, 2020. The incident, which also claimed the life of 46-year-old Earl Cohen of Newark, unfolded on the 100 block of Brookdale Avenue in the early afternoon.
Authorities were called to the scene where both Grady and Cohen were discovered with gunshot
wounds. They were both pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:58 p.m. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the double homicide.
Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the killings of Nekeya Grady and Earl Cohen. Law enforcement officials have not publicly identified any suspects or discussed a potential motive for the shooting. The investigation remains active, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
