In the late hours of a Saturday in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of 36-year-old David Williams was tragically cut short. On May 15, 2021, while driving near the intersection of North Hanover and Stockton streets, Williams became the target of a fatal shooting. Just before 11 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night, and Williams' vehicle, a dark gray Dodge Caravan, was struck by approximately ten bullets before crashing into an unoccupied Toyota Rav4.
First responders arrived at a
chaotic scene. Firefighters worked to extricate Williams from the driver's seat of his crashed vehicle. He was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A female passenger in the car with Williams was not hit by the gunfire but sustained minor injuries from the crash. Williams was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the homicide was swift. The Mercer County Homicide Task Force led the inquiry, meticulously reviewing area video surveillance and interviewing witnesses. Their efforts quickly identified a suspect, 20-year-old Tyrell Williams of Trenton, who is not related to the victim. Just five days after the fatal shooting, on May 20, 2021, Tyrell Williams was arrested by members of the Mercer County Homicide Task Force.
Following his arrest, Tyrell Williams was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm. A search at the time of his arrest also yielded approximately 10 grams of raw heroin, leading to additional narcotics charges. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to detain Tyrell Williams pending his trial. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed as the investigation continues.
