In the late evening hours of a warm summer day, the life of 28-year-old Juan Garcia was tragically cut short on a sidewalk in Paterson, New Jersey. On Saturday, July 3, 2021, at approximately 10:02 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire at 159 Franklin Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Garcia lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were immediately requested as police rendered aid to the young man.
Despite their efforts, Juan Garcia succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The sudden violence of the act sent shockwaves through the community, marking another homicide in a year that was seeing a significant increase in gun violence.
In the days that followed, the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, launched an intensive investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to two suspects, both residents of Paterson. On July 6, 2021, 24-year-old Imeir I. Tucker was arrested without incident when he reported to Paterson Police Headquarters. Two days later, on July 8, the second suspect, 18-year-old Jeremaih Rosado, was apprehended at a tire shop on East 22nd Avenue and Park Avenue.
Both Rosado and Tucker were charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and two weapons-related offenses. The arrests brought a measure of resolution to the case, though the motive for the fatal shooting was not immediately made public. The investigation continued as authorities sought to piece together the events that led to the untimely death of Juan Garcia.
