A quiet Saturday morning in Jersey City was shattered by the sound of gunfire on July 24, 2021. In the area of 94 Grant Avenue, Raquan Bass, a 26-year-old male, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. The initial call reporting the shots came in at approximately 11:00 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Jersey City Police Department. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Bass with injuries to his upper body. He was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Raquan Bass was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. The tragic event cast a somber mood over the community, leaving friends and family to mourn the sudden loss of a young life. In the days that followed, a makeshift memorial with prayer candles and balloons spelling out his nickname, 'Rocky,' appeared on Grant Avenue, marking the spot where he was fatally wounded.
Neighbors remembered him as an expecting father.
The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Jersey City Police Department, launched an immediate and thorough investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of two suspects. A few days after the incident, authorities arrested 32-year-old Yasir Harrison and 21-year-old Jala Long, both of Jersey City. Harrison was charged with murder and weapons offenses, while Long was charged with accomplice to murder. Both were taken into custody without incident, bringing a measure of progress in the quest for justice for Raquan Bass.
