In the quiet, early hours of a Monday morning in Pleasantville, New Jersey, the life of Jazmen Martin-Richardson, a 30-year-old mother of two, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On May 23, 2022, inside her own home on Iowa Avenue, she was fatally shot. Despite the efforts of medical personnel who responded to the scene shortly after midnight, Martin-Richardson was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound. At the time of the incident, her two young sons were asleep in the house, unaware of the violence that had just claimed their mother's life.
The immediate investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a single suspect: her 36-year-old boyfriend, Lamar Pitts of Atlantic City. In a startling turn of events, it was Pitts himself who had placed the 911 call reporting that Martin-Richardson had been shot in the chest. This call, however, did not absolve him of suspicion.
Authorities delved into the couple's recent history and uncovered a disturbing altercation that had occurred just a week prior, where Pitts had allegedly brandished a handgun during a verbal dispute with Martin-Richardson, hinting at a volatile relationship.
Later that same day, Lamar Pitts was arrested and faced a series of serious charges related to the death of his girlfriend. The charges included aggravated manslaughter, unlawful possession of a weapon, and receiving stolen property, as the handgun used in the shooting was determined to have been stolen. Further investigation revealed that Pitts was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior drug conviction from 2013.
