On a tragic evening in Ironwood, Michigan, Helvi Puisto, a 47-year-old male, lost his life amidst a shocking outbreak of violence that claimed the lives of six others. The date was March 16, 1968, when a gunman's rampage shattered the peace of the small town. The night of terror unfolded across multiple locations, beginning at a residence on Airport Road and culminating in a tense confrontation at the Lake Road Tavern in Ironwood Township.
The violent spree was initiated by a man armed
with a heavy-caliber bolt-action rifle. He first attacked the Gustafson home, where five individuals were fatally shot. From there, the gunman proceeded to another residence, where he shot and killed Henry Raymond Hautala and wounded his wife. The final and fatal stop for the perpetrator was the Lake Road Tavern. Inside the tavern, Rudolph Maurin was shot and killed as patrons bravely attempted to subdue the gunman. It was during this struggle that Helvi Puisto was tragically struck by a stray bullet as the weapon discharged.
In the aftermath of the chaos, law enforcement identified the sole suspect as Eric E. Pearson, a 56-year-old woodsman and janitor. Patrons at the tavern were able to seize him at the scene of the last shooting. Pearson was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Rudolph Maurin. Authorities held him without bond, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for later that month. The motive for the devastating series of attacks that left seven dead and three others wounded remained under investigation.
