In the quiet town of Ironwood, Michigan, a shocking act of violence shattered the community on March 16, 1968. On that day, Daniel August Weiss, a 67-year-old male, was tragically killed as part of a shooting spree that claimed the lives of six other individuals. Mr. Weiss, a resident of Lansing, Michigan, was visiting the area at the time of the incident.
The rampage was carried out by a lone gunman, identified as 56-year-old Eric E. Pearson, a local woodsman and janitor.
Armed with a heavy-caliber bolt-action rifle, Pearson began his assault at a residence on Airport Road. It was within this home that Daniel Weiss was fatally shot once in the chest. The scene was described as particularly gruesome by authorities, bearing witness to the brutal nature of the attack.
Following the initial shootings, Pearson continued his violent path to another home and eventually a local tavern. It was at the tavern that patrons managed to subdue him, bringing an end to the bloodshed. Upon his arrest, Pearson informed the officers that he could lead them to five other victims, which ultimately brought them to the house where Mr. Weiss and four others had been killed.
Eric E. Pearson was taken into custody at the scene and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for one of the slayings. He was held without bond pending a preliminary hearing. All accounts of the incident indicate that Pearson acted alone in this tragic event that left a lasting scar on the Ironwood community.
