In the autumn of 1978, a wave of violence descended upon Ypsilanti, Michigan, beginning with the death of Lawrence Leon Gordon. A white male, Gordon was the first victim in a string of brutal killings carried out by his own roommate, William 'Billy' Edward Hardesty. On October 3, 1978, Hardesty took Gordon's life within the confines of their shared home. In a macabre act, he then hanged his roommate's body from a doorknob, leaving a grim discovery for those who would later find him. This initial act of violence marked the beginning of a terrifying rampage that would leave a community in fear and a trail of victims in its wake.
The day after Gordon's murder, Hardesty's murderous spree continued. He targeted another roommate, Willie Dunn, subjecting him to a savage attack. Dunn was stabbed and hacked over 50 times with a machete, a brutal end to his life. The violence escalated dramatically on the evening of October 18th. Hardesty first turned on his own family, shooting and killing his parents, Ronald and Jeannette Hardesty, at their home. Later that same night, he opened fire outside a local Ypsilanti establishment, Abigail's Bar, killing two more men, Troy Curry and Timothy Schofield. His path of destruction did not end there. He proceeded to a machine shop in Ypsilanti Township where he murdered Daniel Wood, the brother of his ex-wife.
Hardesty's reign of terror culminated in a tense, hour-long standoff with police. The confrontation ended with Hardesty being shot twice and finally apprehended. Following his capture, he faced a legal process that delved into his mental state at the time of the killings. After three years of mental competency hearings, a jury found Hardesty guilty of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder, though he was also determined to be mentally ill. He received multiple life sentences for the murders he committed, ensuring that he would no longer be a threat to the community he had terrorized. Hardesty was also convicted on two counts of assault with intent to murder for wounding two other individuals during his violent spree.
